  • New Update to Google Jobs
By on July 2, 2018 | Comments Off on New Update to Google Jobs Comments

Last week Google introduced a new way for job publishers to submit their job feed. Currently you just have to submit a sitemap file to tell them what to crawl. But this new update includes an API that allows for “realtime” submissions so that they can better track when jobs come on your site or expire.

    If you are already indexed by GFJ you don’t really need to do anything. I asked Christian Malpeli from Jobboard.io what he thought of this new way to be indexed;

The end result is not different. However this is an API which allows jobs to be submitted and removed in realtime. We’re already speaking to our G’ contacts on Jobs to see if there is a way for us to submit via API on behalf of our customers. As of now it appears that each site needs to manually verify which isn’t very efficient. I will say we are seeing many cases where customer jobs are ending up on Google Jobs within minutes of being posted already (via the Sitemap.xml method), so not clear if this will be a big win or not.

So not really big news if the sitemap method is working just fine for you. Here are the instructions for the new method which again involves the search console and verification. If any boards actually try this method I’d be curious to hear from you how it works out.

  • How Much Monthly Google Traffic Can You Get?
    By on May 15, 2018 | 6 Comments6 Comments Comments

Now that Google Jobs has been up and running for about a year I thought I would share some stats around how much traffic it actually generates on a monthly basis. Below is a screenshot of Analytics from a small board I run called Jobs With Remote. It has about 800-900 jobs on it at any given time. About 1/3 of the traffic is directly from Google Jobs.

Your results may vary but the easiest way to get on Google Jobs is to use a GJ friendly platform such as SmartJobBoard or Jobboard.io and submit the sitemap to Google’s Search Console. generally speaking the more jobs you have the more traffic you can get.

I have still seen some issues with a few job boards. A client of mine who happens to use Jobboard.io has a few hundred jobs. Some appear on GJ while others do not. Hard to tell why they aren’t picking them all up, ….de-duping could be part of it or they just haven’t refined the crawling as of yet.

  • How to ask for backlinks

If you are looking to get more backlinks to your site one of the things you should be doing is asking for them. I frequently get pitched via email and thought I would share one of those emails so you can use it to craft your own messaging. Its critical to point out specific pagaes to ask for a link so do your homework and tailor each pitch to potential websites.

Hi,  My name is Rekha Pant and I’m part of the team behind Canva. I was doing a bit of research on different content layouts and resumes and saw that your website https://jobfairing.com/online-resume-builder-tools/ has some great design insights and related resources.

I also notice that you link to a number of resume resources  and wonder if you can include ours [https://www.canva.com/en_in/create/resume/designers/] into the list?

Canva is a relatively young design startup that already has more than 10 million users worldwide – and growing fast. Canva’s  impressively easy to use resume maker can help in making an amazing first impression on the employers. A visual resume made with Canva can help put the focus on the skills and experience of candidates.  As you share great stuff on your website, so you can also write about Canva Resume Maker or can include our Templates.

If you need any help with paid graphics and images then we will be more than happy to assist you.   Please let me know if I can answer any of your questions. Thank you for your time!  Best Regards, Rekha Pant.

Though SEO for job boards is changing due to Google Jobs now taking up the above the fold search results it can still bring in traffic from long tail searches. I wouldn’t spend a great deal of time asking for backlinks but newer sites should probably do it more often just to build up some ranking. It can also help you rank in Bing.

  • Job Posting Schema – Why Your Job Board Needs It
By on June 6, 2017 | Comments Off on Job Posting Schema – Why Your Job Board Needs It Comments

A SEO expert who I read regularly thinks the Google Jobs results are being driven by sites that employ a certain job level schema.

He’s probably right. Google needs job data in a specific format and sites that use it are in a better position to be ranked. In the post he points out two examples from Glassdoor and Catholicjobs.com that employ it in their underlying code.

View the schema here: http://schema.org/JobPosting – platforms like Jobboard.io have been using this schema for years. I don’t know if other job board software vendors use it but if not, they better start. If you have a custom built site have your developer restructure the code to comply with these guidelines.

  • Google adding job snippets in results
    By on July 5, 2016 | 1 Comment1 Comment Comments

After googling the phrase “aviation jobs” the other day I noticed this result which caught my eye. Google is creating job snippets off job boardsand placing them in job related searches.

So I clicked the “About this Result” link in the bottom right which led me to this page. Apparently Google automatically creates this snippet from the page itself. And if you read further there is not much you can do to list your site this way.

It’s cool that Google is doing this. If your job board gets this treatment, you get more exposure and more clicks.  I tried to figure out what software powers the Aviation Week website but it doesn’t appear to be a hosted provider, most likely a custom built one.

Google seems to have copied the text from their home page word for word as part of the snippet. Would be nice if they allowed all job boards to feature their jobs this way.

If you happen to see this again while Googling shoot me an email. Something to keep our eyes on.

Lots of job boards and ATS software still dont get how to make a search engine friendly job description. I discovered Freshgigs.ca, a canadian based job board for marketing peeps and thought their job postings were well done.

    * The URL contains the job title AND location: https://www.freshgigs.ca/jobs/product-brand-marketing-manager-toronto-on-1

    * The first thing on the page is a job summary with all the relevant details.

    * The share links are easily visible and they have related jobs on the side.

ATTENTION: job board software company or an ATS there’s some lessons to be learned here!
